Any Business Could Do That.
Three things I learned at Sewell Cadillac that every business could do.
1. Keep your business place really clean. You can’t help but be impressed by taking a trip to Sewell Cadillac in Dallas. I said the same thing at Sewell Cadillac as I did when I took my family to Disney World. “This place is so clean.” Every person was extremely well groomed too. Any business could do that. Every business could and should keep their place of business so clean that folks remark about it, even if it’s old. I have a 1978 Mercedes 280ce. I keep it meticulously clean. Your business doesn’t have to be new to be clean looking. People expect it. Some folks will never return to a business because of dirty rest rooms. Out of every 100 people how many do you think would not come back to a place that wasn’t sparkling clean? I don’t know, but even if it’s one, can you afford that?
2. Be friendly and smile.Every employee I walked past, or talked to, smiled and kinda nodded at me. It’s a friendly gesture thing we do in the south. It’s like saying non-verbally, “Howdy, I’m glad to see today.”
What it did was made me feel important. Every person wants to feel like they are important. A business that treats customers likes they are VIP’s will always have waiting line to get in.
Ryan Henson, sales manager at Sewell, said to me, “We don’t just sell cars here, we sell service. You can buy a Cadillac from any one of seven dealers within a thirty-minute drive. I’m not saying we’re not competitive on price. We are. But we are known for our service. When people come here they know they’ll get over the top service.”
Any business could have their employees do that.
3. Figure out something to make you stand out from your competitionSewell Cadillac did it with service. McDonalds did it with getting your food to you quickly. Maybe there was fast food before them but even if there were, McDonalds made it famous. Roto-Rooter specialized in opening clogged drains and Dominoes delivered your pizza in thirty minutes, or it was free. Shoji Tabuchi (famous fiddle player in Branson Mo) did it with $1,000,000 rest rooms; Lamberts did it with “throwd” rolls.
One Hour Heating and Air-conditioning service techs are at your location within an hour of the time they told you; or your service is free, Outback Steakhouse is known for those great steaks, lots of restaurants have great steaks but don’t have a “Bloomin’ Onion” like Outback.
What can you do to separate your business from your competitors? That is a question to think on long and hard. It should keep you up at night. It should make you search until you find it. You should read all the books you can find about it, and ask as many highly successful business owners as you can that will grant you an interview. Keep looking as if you were panning for gold because indeed; the answer could make you ridiculously wealthy.
It takes a combination of many things to have a successful money making business. If lack a few of the others but you have these three, you’ll probably do all right.
